Travel writer asks ‘Is creativity dangerous?’

In an article written for Road Less Travelled, travel writer, blogger, and photographer Ben Farrell questioned if creativity is dangerous.

Citing great artists like Salvador Dali, Vincent Van Gogh, and Pablo Picasso as examples, Farrell asked if detachment from reality is necessary to come up with incredible works of art.

“The great artists and philosophers of the time became recluses and withdrew from society unable to express themselves in any other way but through their art and were simply made outcasts and even killed by ancient cultures… Their ideas deemed ‘too radical, insane or against the church of the time.’” Farrell wrote.

According to Farrell, creativity is the “ability to view the world objectively and allow abstract thought.” Like what was observed in the lives of many great artists, Farrell believes transition and some form of detachment from reality is needed to come up with a creative thought.

Answering his own question, Farrell said that creativity can be dangerous.

“However, I think that as long as we express what we find in the hidden depths of our soul and we don’t end up spending night after night with a bruised and worn out objective muse that keeps us within our own head, then no,” he explained.

In the future, Farrell sees the world evolving to normalize free creative expression or allowing people to find interesting ways to creatively express themselves.
