‘Real-life Benjamin Button’ ages rapidly due to rare condition

At first glance, you’ll probably assume Bayezid Hossain is already in his 80s.

Because of an incredibly rare condition, Hossain, a four-year-old boy from Magura in southern Bangladesh, looks way beyond his age. His sagging skin, hollow eyes, swollen face, as well as weak and broken teeth add decades to his appearance.

Like most pensioners, Hossain experiences aching joints as well as difficulty peeing.

His peculiar appearance has earned him the monicker “real life Benjamin Button”.

But unlike Benjamin Button, he won’t age in reverse as he suffers from a premature ageing disorder called progeria, which makes sufferer’s body age at eight times the normal rate. People with this condition usually die at an average age of 13 due to heart attacks or strokes.

His mother Tripti Khatun, 18, said Hossain only learned to walk at the age of three but already had a full set of teeth at only three months old. Although Hossain’s physical growth is out of ordinary, Khatun believes her son’s mental ability and personality developed much faster than other kids in their village.

“His physical growth is completely abnormal but mentally, he has wonderful conversation (sic), very aware and is very intuitive for his age,” she told The Daily Mail Uk.

Unfortunately, Hossain is unable to go to school because other children are afraid of him.

The poor family has sought the help of people from hospitals, shamans, shrines, and fakirs (Muslim ascetics) but to no avail. His situation has even worsened day by day.

Debashis Bishwas, who met with the family last month, suggests that Hossain get specialized care in hospitals in Dhaka.
