Men hoping to become a father in the near future may need to reduce their time in front of the TV according to a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.
The research carried out by experts at Copenhagen University showed that spending too much time watching your favorite TV series may slash a man’s sperm count by a third and spell problems in their baby-making capabilities.
After examining 1,200 healthy young men’s lifestyles, the experts discovered that those with couch potato lifestyles had average sperm counts of 37 million per milliliter of fluid, while men with a different lifestyle had a sperm count of 52 million per milliliter. While this figure is not considered a low count, normal sperm count ranges from 40 million to 300 million per milliliter.
“Time spent watching television, but not time sitting in front of a computer, was associated with lower sperm counts,” the researchers concluded.
Based on their findings, the research team suggested that men’s laziness and love of TV play the biggest role in their reduced sperm count.
Moreover, they also found that TV addicts had sperm counts about 30% lower than people with sedentary lifestyles.
