Dogs are known as man’s best friend for a lot of reasons. As what pet owners surely know, dogs are the most loyal, loving and caring pets in the world – which is why many people are interested to get themselves a pup for their own families.
Most dogs are well taken care of and showered with love by their owners, however, there are also a few who was unfortunate to be disregarded by their owners.
A female netizen named Katrina Legaspi shared his dog, ‘Chico’s story to her Facebook friends.
Her post instantly went viral because of the inspiring story and how Legaspi was able to calm the dog down.
“January 7, 2017
We adopted him from my friend, at first syempre hesitant kami kasi nga grabe talaga itsura niya, nag buhol buhol na ang balahibo and punong puno ng garapata ang katawan… At may busal siya sa bibig kasi, sobrang tapang niya na hindi namin sure kung mapapaamo namin siya.. Pero sa huli, kinuha parin namin kasi sobrang naawa kami.”
The door was in a bad condition when Legaspi was given the custody of the dog. She immediately brought the dog to the vet to have him checked, which the Vet recommended to trim his fur to be able to treat his wounds.
Here’s the dog’s appearance five days after he was taken into a new home.
The dog hasn’t opened up to her yet, and she can’t touch him as Chico would bark at her – indicating that he doesn’t want to be ‘pet’.

Tumutubo na din ang balahibo niya sa wakas, at napapakawalan na namin siya sa bahay, pero hindi ko parin siya mahawakan. Mas gusto niya sa boyfriend ko.”
“At dahil masyadong makulit, nilagay sa washing machine para paliguan, mukhang masama ang loob ng baby namin pero good job padin kay Paul unti unti na silang nagiging close at syempre saakin din.”
Legaspi felt that the dog was slowly learning to trust her as they were able to do a few things together, like taking selfies. He also began to warm up to them, though he was still aggressive at times.

Chico’s fur was also getting thicker and healthier as a proof that he was being well taken care of by his new fur parent. Moreover, he also became more playful.

Chico’s appearance improved a lot ever since the first day he was adopted by Legaspi, and obviously, he likes his new home.

Exactly three months after we adopted him. Natuto nang mag smile lagi and nagpapa-kitang gilas kasi dumating si Loki. Gusto niya ata siya lang ang baby namin.”

Chico was already in a perfect condition. It turns out that he was a chow chow breed of dog. Legaspi shared that a lot of their neighbors are very fond of him, but they couldn’t touch him.
“And he loves to take selfies with me….”
“After maligo, pinagtripan namin. And obviously ayaw niya ng ginawa namin skanya. Hahahaha.”
The dog often showed his smile to Legaspi, especially when he did something terrible. On the other hand, Legaspi just couldn’t resist his cuteness.

Yung Chico na hindi namin mahawakan before at lagi naka simangot, ngayon hindi mo na mapipigilan sa kakulitan at lagi pang nakangiti, sobrang active na aso. At kahit ilang beses nya kami nakagat nung first month niya samin, hindi kami nagsisisi na inadopt namin siya kasi iba ung saya na nadala niya saamin lalo na at good boy na siya.”

Since summer at mainit, Paul decided na dalhin siya sa vet para ipa-groom, kaso ung vet sa congressional kung saan dinadala namin ang mga aso namin, hindi sila nag ggroom.
Kaya naghanap kami ng naggroom malapit samin, and we decided na dalhin siya sa Celebrity Pet Veterinary Clinic – Tandang Sora para pagupitan.
Yung dapat grooming lang sana ang gagawin, nasabayan ng check-up. They prescribed this anti-biotic dahil may rashes ang eggs niya – and wala naman ng ibang problema bukod dun, then sakanila narin binili yung gamot, so sinunod nga namin para sana mawala na ung rashes, pinainom namin siya kung paano yung tinuro nila, kaso after 2-3 days niya uminom, napansin namin medyo tumamlay siya at bigla natutumba habang naglalakad, akala namin side effects lang ng gamot, na baka sobrang tapang lang kaya baka kako nahihilo siya kaya pinapahiga lang namin.
Pero hindi na namin siya pinainom and naghihintay lang kami ng pera para maibalik namin siya sa Vet kung saan namin talaga dinadala mga aso namin.
I also tried to search online kung nakakasama ba sa aso ang cefalexin, and madaming negative comments about it na ung aso nila parang nahihilo din, just like what happened with Chico and days after namatay ang aso nila.”

Just this morning, nakahiga pa kami ni Paul kakagising lang and may kausap kami tapos biglang lumapit si Chico saamin, nagulat si Paul kasi biglang natumba siya, kaya nilapitan niya, pero Chico still managed na tumayo and went outside of our room para umihi at magpupu, (doon palang nag decide na kami na dadalhin na namin siya sa vet kahit wala pa kaming pera) pumasok ulit si Chico sa kwarto at pagewang gewang siya, nung hinawakan siya ni Paul bigla nalang siyang bumagsak and that’s it, he already left us. We tried na i-revive siya pero wala na talaga, it’s too late.
Hindi ko alam kung may pagkukulang kami pero we did our best to make him happy and healthy.
Ang daming ‘sana’ – na sana hindi kami pumayag na painumin ng gamot agad dahil wala pa naman diagnosis ang vet, na sana binalik namin agad siya don sa trusted vet namin, na sana nagamot siya agad, na sana buhay pa siya Na sana mas matagal pa namin siya nakasama. Sorry baby, sobrang sorry.
I’m not sure why I’m sharing this, maybe to let everyone know how much furparents love their furbaby. Na sana walang nananakit ng aso or nanglalason kasi the pain of losing them is too much. Hindi kami namatayan lang ng aso, nawalan din kami ng anak, ng pamilya..”

Legaspi’s story is truly inspiring, but also sad at the same time. Who would have thought that Chico will die after following what the veterinarian told her?
She do have a lot of regrets, but she can’t do anything now but to pray that Chico is happy wherever he might be, and that she should bring her pets to a trusted professional next time to avoid similar circumstances like this to happen.
The netizens who had read her story was saddened that the dog wasn’t able to stay a long time in Legaspi’s care, seeing how he improved a lot.
Although Chico and Legaspi’s story ended that way, it can still be considered as a happy ending because the dog was given a second chance to enjoy a wonderful life with a loving furparents. Also, Legaspi was able to win his heart over because of her constant efforts to make the dog see that she will not do anything to hurt him.
