Director Darryl Yap slammed the netizens who urged the government to show more support for Filipino film and content.
Sen. Jinggoy Estrada previously proposed, “out of frustration,” a ban on Korean dramas and other foreign television content in order to give Filipino talents more exposure. He later apologized for his remarks.
Estrada posted on Facebook, “My statement stems from the frustration that while we are only too eager and willing to celebrate South Korea’s entertainment industry, we have sadly allowed our own to deteriorate because of the lack of support from the movie-going public.” He added, “I wish that the zealousness of our kababayans (countrymen) in patronizing foreign artists can be replicated to support our homegrown talents which I strongly believe are likewise world-class.”
Actress Bela Padilla then came out saying that Korean content is so much better than Filipino content because of the Korean government’s support. Her remark prompted Filipinos to plead with the government to do the same.
However, Yap had something else to say.
Still, on the same platform, the controversial director noted that Filipinos criticized the candidates in the previous film festival under the Duterte administration. He stated, “Nakakatawa yung mga iyak nang iyak para magkaroon daw ng suporta ang gobyerno sa showbiz industry pero nu’ng Duterte Government halos ipako nila sa krus yung mga inupo sa Film seats.”
He claimed that the netizens now urging the government to support Filipino content are the same people who heavily criticize the current administration. Yap expressed frustration when he said, “Ngayon naman, kesa makisama sa pagbuo ng kumikita at matibay na industriya, itong mga diyus-diyosan mismo ang bunganga nang bunganga—gustong mapabagsak ang gobyerno at bumibirit ng boycott—tapos aatungal ng WALANG SUPORTA ANG GOBYERNO.”
The ‘Maid In Malacañang’ director added, “Para sabihin ko sa inyo, panahon ni PNOY, halos buong showbiz sinuportahan siya—sa panahon nya naman nagsimulang sumadsad ang industriya. may narinig ba kayo sa mga taga-showbiz na ayaw sa kanya— WALA.”
According to Yap, the Korean entertainment industry is so much better because its talent has worked so hard to achieve success. As Yap informed the netizens, the Korean Entertainment Industry also had a time when foreign films were limited so the local industry would be revitalized.
