The director shared he has no plans of altering the core story and characters of the story upon which his upcoming TV adaptation is based.
Television and film director, Theodore Boborol (Be Careful with My Heart, Be My Lady, Vince Kath & James), gave his word yesterday, November 3, during the first press conference of the highly anticipated TV adaptation of the phenomenal Web novel series, The Rain in España, that he intends to be faithful to the book series. Boborol gave his promise in the presence of the Wattpad series’ writer, Gwy Saludes, whom he described to be hands-on throughout the casting process for the series.
“I’m also a fan of other literature and sometimes, ‘di ba pag nagbabasa ka, may sarili kang imagination? And then when you watch the adaptation, ‘parang hindi ito ‘yung naiimagine ko ah’, palaging ganon kasi subjective siya eh. Iba iba iyong imagination ng mga tao. Iba -iba ang ga naiisip natin.
“(Sometimes when you read a book, you tend to create your visual interpretation of what you read, right? But when you watch the adaptation, what you see onscreen often defies what you previously imagined. That’s usually the case because a person’s imagination is subjective. We think differently),” he noted.
“Iyon ang pinaka-challenge sa akin, na siguro ‘yung essence ng libro, hindi mawala.
“(That’s my greatest challenge here, to make sure that the original story’s essence does not get lost),” he confessed, as he happily shared how the book’s author, Gwy Saludes, has been hands-on in the entire adaptation process.
“I’m very happy that Gwy is very hands-on, because gusto kong I-honor ang dahilan bakit sumikat ‘yung University series. Hindi ko babaguhin ang kwento, hindi ako magdadagdag ng characters. Of course, may difference, because iba ang written literature sa visual medium, pero gagawin ko ang lahat ng makakaya na kung ano ang nagustuhan ng mga tao sa libro, iyon ang mapapanood nila sa screen.
“(I’m very happy that Gwy has been very hands on, because I really want to honor the reason why the series became a hit. I will not change the story, nor I will add a new character. Of course, I understand that there will be a difference between written literature and visual medium, but it is my utmost intention to show just the beautiful things that the fans loved the most about the books),” he promised.
Saludes, meanwhile, expressed his gratitude to Boborol for respecting the fans’ wishes, as well as how she designed the story and characters of her Wattapd novels.
“Nag-usap na rin po kami ni Direk kaya it really is nice to be working with Direk. Talagang binasa niya talaga ‘yung buong story at series para lang maintindihan niya ‘yung esssence ng story. And sobrang happy ako na naintindihan ni Direk ‘yung mga gusto ng fans at gusto ko pang mangyari.
“(Direk and I already talked about it, and it’s been nice to be working with him. He read the entire story to be able to understand its essence. I am very happy that he understands what the fans and I like to happen in the adaptation),” she shared.
The Rain in España is projected to be just the first of six full-length series that are to be based on their corresponding University series, written by Saludes. Pinoy Big Brother alums, Heaven Peralejo and Marco Gallo are the lead stars of the first series. Should the maiden series become successful, the remaining five will also get pushed through as stand-alone series in the same universe as The Rain of España. Also part of the cast is Bea Binene, Gab Lagman, Krisha Viaje, Aubrey Caraan, Nicole Omillo, and Gabby Padilla.
