A nursing student has gotten viral after providing first aid to a man who collapsed due to intense heat while walking on the streets of Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, on April 28.
Julia Baguio promptly attended to the older adult, who showed signs of heat stroke when he stumbled and fell on the road.
Unbeknownst to Baguio, someone took a photo of her, causing her actions to become viral quickly.
Baguio sent a message to everyone through a Facebook post, encouraging them not to hesitate to help others, especially in times of need.
“LEND A HAND IF YOU CAN INSTEAD OF BECOMING DEAF AND BLIND TO PEOPLE WHO NEED IT THE MOST,” she said.
She expressed gratitude to the people who sent her messages for appreciating her kindness. However, she dismissed the idea that saving someone’s life was not a “heroic” act but rather something we all need to do. She added, “A little act of kindness could go a long way.”
Heat stroke can be a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when your body cannot regulate its temperature due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
Heat stroke symptoms include a high body temperature, a rapid heartbeat, rapid breathing, headaches, dizziness, confusion, and loss of consciousness.
The first step in treating heat stroke is to move the affected person to a cool and shaded area, away from direct sunlight.
Fans or air conditioning can further cool the area down.
The person should be provided with plenty of water or a sports drink containing electrolytes to replace the fluids and minerals lost through sweating. If the individual is conscious, they should sip the liquid slowly to avoid vomiting or choking.
