VP Sara Duterte responds to alleged ‘snubbing’ of Speaker Martin Romualdez

Vice President Sara Duterte chose to remain silent on the purported incident of “snubbing” involving Speaker Martin Romualdez at Villamor Air Base in Pasay City.

Romualdez accompanied President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on his recent three-leg trip to the United States, and Duterte welcomed the delegation upon their return on Monday evening.

A video circulated on social media, showing Duterte walking past Romualdez to greet another official, prompting speculations about a deliberate snub.

In response, Duterte stated in a report on ’24 Oras’ by Ian Cruz on Tuesday that she had not seen the video circulating on social media and, therefore, could not comment on the matter.

“Oh, Hindi ko nakita… Hindi ko nakita yung nasa social media. Di ako maka comment… Wala ako nakita.”

This situation was made viral especially on social media X where majority made fun of the incident.

Duterte resigned as a member of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) party in May of this year, where she served as the party chairperson.

Although she did not specify the reason for her resignation, Duterte emphasized that the public’s trust in her leadership remains unscathed by “political toxicity” or “execrable political power plays.”

Earlier this month, the House of Representatives removed former President and Pampanga lawmaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and Davao City Representative Isidro Ungab as deputy speakers for failing to sign a resolution supporting Romualdez.

Duterte expressed her full support for Arroyo and Ungab, both politically and as friends.

In addition to the removal of deputy speakers, the House excluded the confidential and intelligence funds of certain civilian agencies, including the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education, from the proposed 2024 national budget, both under Duterte’s leadership.

This move prompted criticism from former President Rodrigo Duterte, Sara’s father, who referred to the House as the most corrupt institution, accusing its members of having bellies full of pork barrel funds—lump sum amounts allocated to projects after the passage of the General Appropriations Act.

He also mentioned that he would consider running for either vice president or senator if his daughter were to face impeachment.

“Kung ano man yung decision ni Pangulong Duterte ay buo ang suporta ng pamilya sa kanya,” said the Vice President.

Romualdez, a cousin of the President, expressed optimism about the House-Duterte relationship improving after Sara Duterte relinquished the P500 million confidential fund under the proposed 2024 national budget.

He also affirmed that the Marcos-Duterte alliance, known as ‘UniTeam,’ remains intact from the 2022 elections.

“We always work together. It is still a Uniteam. The President always wants us to work together, so we will always strive for that,” he stated.
