University of the Phippines Law student Chad Patrick Osorio has very powerful statements about mediocrity and people’s aim to be avarage.
On the midnight of May 26, Osorio tweeted very controversial statements about people “not exerting enough effort”. He stated that does understand that school isn’t the “end-all, be-all” of life but he doesn’t understand people’s “romantization of being average” by congratulating students who bare pass their subjects.
“Mediocrity posts all around, congratulating students for barely passing their subjects. I’m like, totoo ba kayo? I do understand that school isn’t the end-all, be-all of life, but why are we romanticizing being average instead of striving hard to be the best we can be?”
He followed with another tweet that he doesn’t believe in the excuses of “yan lang kaya ng utak niyo” as he thinks that the mind is powerful enough to do what anything it sets itself to do. He then followed it with “You’re just no exerting enough effort.”
“And don’t give me that bull na yan lang kaya ng utak nyo. Your mind is powerful, and can do anything it sets itself to do. You’re just not exerting enough effort. Haist. Sayang ang napakaikling buhay celebrating the mediocre.”
He continued the thread with a series of tweets supporting his statements.
Osorio’s tweets have gone viral on Twitter as a majority of the netizens gave a negative feedback to the statements mentioned.
“umm maybe because not everyone is capable of being a straight a student? lol if u are a remarkable student who has high credentials then good for u but that doesn’t give you the authority to shit on others who give all they’ve got to pass their subjects”
“everyone to chad osorio”
One day after the Twitter fiasco, Osorio posted a public apology saying that he subtweeted the tweets while lacking proper parameters and context. He stated that he knows how hard it is and what he’s talking about in his infamous tweets are the “pwede na yan” mentality.
It can be read that he is hoping for people to understand that he didn’t mean to belittle those who truly strive.
Osorio admitted that he is being “mayabang” and what he should do is check his privilege. But despite the backlash, he said that he will not delete tweets as he never really do so.
He ended his statement about the issue with a public Facebook apology saying that it pains him to know that people were hurt by his words.
“It pains me to think that people are hurt by these words, some of them even individuals I love and respect, and I offer my deepest apologies. Please note that I never intended to offend, and if I had inadvertently done so through my words, I’m sorry…
…I am a work in progress. I make mistakes, and sometimes I hurt people, inadvertently and even with the best of intentions. I hope to learn from these experiences and grow.
Better and better, a little bit every day.”
