- Actor Jean-Claude Van Damme makes controversial comments about same-sex marriage.
- The actor received a backlash from his fellow panelist after such statement.
In an episode of a French chat show called “On n’est pas couche” last June 30, actor Jean-Claude Van Damme made comments regarding same-sex marriage and its comparison to dogs.
On the talk show, Van Damme responded to a fellow panelist and Gender Equality Minister Marlene Schiappa who was asking for his opinion about women after he implied that women belonged in the house. She asked him about his view on same-sex marriage.
“According to your theory, if a man marries another man or a woman marries a woman, how does that work?”
The actor responded “Men get married, women get married, dogs get married… Everybody is getting married and everybody is getting divorced,” the actor responded, which prompted laughter from the studio audience.
Schippa was appalled immediately thought that it is not funny as that day is “the day of the Pride parade where people march to defend their rights… There are people who are beaten and insulted because they are homosexual. We need to support them rather than mocking them, saying they are dogs.”
Van Damme attempted to defend himself saying that he has a lot of friends who are gay.
However, he once again attempted to tell a joke saying that “If they want to get married, that’s OK. But the question is, if all the boys marry each another and all the women marry each other, how are we going to have children?” which once again earned laughter from the audience.
The Kickboxer, Street Fighter and The Expendables 2 actor has yet to release an official statement regarding the issue.
