Miss International Philippines 2017 Mariel de Leon has previously received flack for her comments about Catriona Gray, who was then still a hopeful at the Binibining Pilipinas 2018.
Gray has represented the country in the 2016 Miss World competition, and finished as third runner-up.

The candidates then were subjected to an interview by selected panel, which de Leon was a part of. In one of the questions, she said that her strength is that she’s an empath.
“I feel everything very strongly and I find that when I sing through music it helps me connect to people.”

While de Leon liked Grey’s confidence and speaking ability, she found the answer “just a tiny bit scripted.” The criticism went viral on social media and de Leon got negative comments from netizens.
Just before the coronation of the Miss Universe 2018, de Leon tweeted her support for Gray saying that “she will by Miss Universe 2018!”

It can be remembered that despite her background de Leon that she doesn’t want to be called a beauty queen as she already “closed that chapter” in her life.
“I’d appreciate it if you guys could stop tagging me in pageant posts (especially if it doesn’t involve me). I don’t like being called a beauty queen.”
She has also congratulated the newly-crowned Miss Universe after the coronation night.
