- We give you 10 Aqua-mazing Things We Love In DCEU’s “Aquaman”.
The king of Atlantis has arrived in Philippine cinemas to claim the box-office throne with the release of “Aquaman”. Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Films, The Safran Company, Cruel And Unusual Films and Mad Ghost Productions, the film is the sixth installment of the DC Extended Universe.
The film features Jason Momoa as the titular hero, based on the DC Comics character of the same name. The film marks the third live-action theatrical film appearance of Aquaman, follwing “Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice” (2016) and “Justice League” (2017). It’s also the first full-length feature film that revolves around the character.
And now that we’ve finally watched it, we give you 10 Aqua-mazing Things We Love In DCEU’s “Aquaman”.
10. It’s Rich and Colorful Mythology.
The story of Aquaman will never be complete without the underwater world of Atlantis and its mythology. The film features many characters from the original mythology of the comic books, like Nuidis Vulko (played by Willem Dafoe), Ocean Master (played by Patrick Wilson), Black Manta (played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), Stephen Shin (played by Randall Park) and of course, Atlanna, the queen of Atlantis (portrayed by Nicole Kidman).
9. The Visual Spectacle.
Considering the scope of the film’s story, it is no surprise that the film features a lot of stunning underwater sequences that will highlight the glorious kingdom of Atlantis. Fans will surely get their money’s worth as their eyes feast upon the gorgeous and realistic visuals of “Aquaman”, from the CGI creatures up to the landscapes of the sea kingdom that’s perfected until the most minute detail.
8. The Non-Stop Action.
James Wan is also famous for directing the “Furious 7” (alternatively known as Fast & Furious 7), the seventh installment in The Fast and the Furious franchise which featured the late Paul Walker (marking his final film appearance, who died in a single-vehicle crash on November 30, 2013). So it is no surprise that the majority of the film are packed with non-stop action and battle scenes, featuring the king of Atlantis himself against the seven seas.
7. It’s The First Aquaman Movie Ever!
Since his launch back in November 1941, Aquaman has only appeared in television shows, direct-to-DVD animated films and video games. He was featured in the animated series “Super Friends”, “Justice League”, and “Justice League Unlimited”. And who can forget his role in the live-action television series “Smallville”. There was even a television pilot for an Aquaman series featuring Justin Hartley but the show was scrapped. This film marks the first live-action movie that is all about the king of Atlantis
6. James Wan’s Solid Direction.
James Wan has brought us many of our favorite films like “Saw”, “Insidious”, “The Conjuring” and “Furious 7”. And he did not disappoint with the big screen adaptation of the hit comic book hero Aquaman. His solid direction proves his talent as a filmmaker, from those sweeping battle scenes to the epic showdown in the finale of the film.
5. Patrick Wilson as Ocean Master.
We’ve all come to know Patrick Wilson in films like “The Phantom of the Opera” (2004) and “Watchmen” (2009), but he became even more popular after starring in James Wan’s horror blockbusters “Insidious” (2010) and “The Conjuring” (2013) which earned him the title as a “Scream King”. Now, he portrays Orm / Ocean Master, Arthur Curry’s Atlantean half-brother and current ruler of the kingdom of Atlantis, who seeks to unite the seven underwater kingdoms to declare war on the surface world out of the belief that the humanity is polluting the seas and destroying it.
4. Nicole Kidman as Atlanna.
When we learned about Nicole Kidman has a role in “Aquaman”, we couldn’t be more excited. Here, she plays Atlanna, the Queen of Atlantis, mother of Arthur Curry and Orm. If you can recall, Kidman has also played Bruce Wayne’s girlfriend, Dr. Chase Meridian, in Joel Schumacher’s “Batman Forever” that debuted more than 20 years ago.
3. Amber Heard as Mera.
Amber Heard plays Mera, Arthur Curry’s love interest, a warrior and daughter of King Nereus. Her character first debuted in “Justice League” (2017) and she reprised the role in Aquaman (2018). Mera was raised by Queen Atlanna and groomed to become the next queen. Her character possesses hydrokinetic and telepathic powers that allows her to control her aquatic environment and communicate with other fellow Atlanteans. She recently visited the country with director James Wan and co-star Jason Momoa for their fan-meet event at the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City last December 11, 2018.
2. Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry/ Aquaman.
Jason Momoa became known after starring in films like “Conan the Barbarian” (2011) and “Wolves” (2014) and as Khal Drogo in the HBO epic fantasy series “Game of Thrones”. Here he plays Arthur Curry/ Aquaman, a half-Atlantean/half-human and the reluctant king of Atlantis who has the ability to manipulate the tides of the ocean, communicate with other aquatic life, swim at supersonic speeds, and possesses superhuman strength.
