Netizen has been alerted about the social media rumors that drinking cold water in hot summer months is not good for the health and doctors have contradicted this statement.

An online post claimed that when temperatures hit 40, and above, degrees Celsius, a person should not drink or take a bath in cold water for it could make blood vessels explode.

According to Dr. Tony Leachon in an interview with DZMM Teleradyo, the claim is fake news.

“Fake news ‘yan, hindi totoo,” Dr. Tony Leachon said of the claim.

Dr. Tony emphasized that during summer as we feel the scorching heat of the sun, drinking cold water is one of the practices that we should continue because our body needs enough amounts of water. With this kind of weather, people do usually sweat that can cause dehydration.

“In fact, ‘yan dapat ang gagawin natin during the time ng tag-init kasi ang body natin will need extra amounts ng tubig. Madalas tayong papawisan dito at nade-dehydrate ang iba diyan,” he told radio DZMM.

If our body experience dehydration, this might result in much worse health conditions such as heatstroke. According to the cardiologist, sometimes the remedy for a heatstroke is by dunking the patient in a tub of cold water.

Netizens should be aware, he said, that nausea, rapid heartbeat, and having difficulty in urinating are among the symptoms of heatstroke.

When you experience these symptoms, patients should lie down, loosen their clothes, drink water, wipe their body parts with wet towels, especially the neck and underarm and seek good ventilation as first aid, he said.

But in severe cases, the patient should go directly to the clinic of hospitals.

Prevention is better than cure, so in this hot weather, we must keep our body cool and drink a lot of liquids to avoid dehydration that can lead to heatstroke.
