- Church of Cyprus bishop Neophytos Masouras of Morphou says gay people exist because pregnant women have anal sex
- Says that anal sex is unnatural
Church of Cyprus bishop Neophytos Masouras of Morphou in June said that babies turn into homosexuals when their mothers have anal sex during their pregnancy.
He said this during his speech at a primary school in Akaki, Cyprus. “A problem, which is usually transmitted by parents to the child,” Masouras said.
Masouras said that anal sex is not advisable and is not natural. “It happens during the parent’s intercourse or pregnancy. It follows an unnatural sexual act between the parents.”
He even quoted Saint Porfyrios about how a mother passes on her desires to her offspring. “To be more clear, anal sex. ‘[Saint Porfyrios] says that when the woman enjoys that, a desire is created, and then the desire is passed on to the child.”
This went viral on social media and people were soon treating it as a joke. “So, father, if the woman does oral, will the child become a dentist?” said one netizen.
One netizen says that it is absurd that Masouras had thousands of people believing what he said. “The problem is not this ignoramus, the tragic problem is that there are thousands who believe him.”
Since 1998, Cyprus made it clear that it is okay to identify as a homosexual. Cyprus has also made new laws regarding the LGBTQ community.
In 2004, discrimination against gender identity and orientation has been prohibited. Same-sex marriage has been supported since 2015. In the same year, a hate crime law against the community has been passed.
However, it is only recently back in 2014 that homosexuality has been decriminalized in the northern part of Cyrus which is dominated by Turkish people.
The LGBTQ community is still looked down in that area.
