Racism against the Chinese spreading along with the Wuhan coronavirus epidemic

This has resulted in the massive generalization and bullying against Chinese nationals, even if they’re not suffering from the Wuhan virus.

  • A netizen narrated a scenario he witnessed at a local market about the blatant bullying and racism against Chinese nationals in the country.
  • Twitter users have begun warning fellow Asians of the racism that they can encounter amid the Wuhan coronavirus epidemic.

China has issued a lockdown for several areas of the country and other nations have also declared that Chinese nationals coming from the infected cities and provinces are restricted from entering due to fears of spreading the Wuhan coronavirus.

While this is a protective measure to ensure the citizens’ health and contain such a fast-spreading disease, it has also become a way for people to attack and bully Chinese nationals, and even Asians in general. Alongside the coronavirus, the sickness that is racism has also become much worse.

A Facebook user named Jehan Dienzo has posted about a scenario that he encountered while in the public market. The Philippine government has yet to issue a ban when it comes to Chinese nationals entering the country, and this resulted to Filipinos being attentive of them roaming around, afraid that they’ll contain the nCov 2019.

This has resulted in the massive generalization and bullying against Chinese nationals, even if they’re not suffering from the Wuhan virus. Dienzo narrated that men have made fun of a few Chinese, joking about how they themselves have the said disease.

This doesn’t just happen in the Philippines as several netizens have also begun spreading messages regarding the severe discrimination that Asians have experienced since the boom of the Wuhan virus.

“Brace yourselves for racist, fear-mongering garbáge as news and misinformation of coronavirus fly across the timeline,” one warned on Twitter.

At least 170 people have died and 7,000 cases have been confirmed in mainland China as the Wuhan coronavirus spreads across the archipelago. 91 cases have been confirmed outside the virus’s origin country.
